Sooke School District (62) is pleased to be participating in the New Teacher Mentoring Project this year. This project is a province wide initiative and includes a partnership among the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, the BC Schools Superintendents Association, and the University of BC. Alison Davies, experienced elementary teacher and coordinator for this project, will facilitate 3 mentor training sessions for us this year. For more information about the BC Teacher Mentoring Project, please visit the BCTF project website.
In addition, Sooke teachers new to their current assignment or new to teaching will have the opportunity to work with one another and colleague mentors to develop reciprocal mentoring relationships as part of a continuum of teacher learning.
Mentors: Experienced Sooke SD teachers (5 or more years) who value welcoming and supporting new teacher-colleagues to the profession/in a new teaching assignment
Mentees: Sooke SD teachers new teaching or new to their current teaching assignment
This project seeks to provide a coherent, research-based, and sustainable system of support for teachers new to their teaching assignment and/or the profession.
Step 1: At the end of September, a survey made available to teachers to assess the needs of those new to their teaching assignment and/or new to the profession within our district. Based on these needs, a call will go out for interested teacher mentors.
Step 2: Once mentees and mentors have been determined, teacher mentors will participate in two mentor training days on November 14th & 15th, 2013 and one on March 28th, 2014. Mentors and mentees will meet on Nov 15th , 2013 with mentees attending thafternoon. Release time will be provided.
Step 3: After the initial mentor training sessions, teacher mentors and mentees will collaboratively develop a mentoring system that best meets the participants’ needs and falls within the budget allocated to this project.
